Meet the Team
HORMOBIOME brings together an interdisciplinary research team spanning microbiology, bioinformatics, dentistry, clinical sciences and data analysis. The team includes postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates and early-career scientists working collaboratively across experimental and computational approaches to address complex questions at the hormone–microbiome interface.

Principal Investigator

Principal Investigator
Associate Professor. University of Seville (Spain)
Aurea Simon-Soro, DMD, PhD
Leads HORMOBIOME by defining conceptual and quantitative frameworks at the hormone–microbiome interface. Her research integrates microbial ecology, hormonal biology and data-driven approaches to understand how hormone-microbiome interactions shape health trajectories.
Building on domain expertise in oral and mucosal microbiomes, her work is not limited to a single anatomical niche, focusing instead on generalizable principles relevant to women’s health and complex disease contexts.
Postdoctoral Team

Researcher
Maria J. Rus, DMD, PhD
Fascinated by the complexities of the human body, I apply bioinformatics to study how microorganisms impact our health. Beyond science, I love cooking and mystery novels.

Postdoctoral Researcher
Cristiane Cantiga-Silva, DMD, PhD
Fascinated by how the oral microbiota influences systemic diseases. My goal is to understand the mechanisms linking our oral microbiome to the health of the entire body. Beyond science, I enjoy gardening and running.

Periodontist
Ángela Fernández de Velasco Tarilonte, DDS, PhD
Enthusiast of the world of surgery and periodontics. I love working daily with patients, seeing how science and research can improve their quality of life. Beyond science, I love reading, hiking and travelling.

Postdoctoral Researcher
Elena Bermúdez Bejarano, DMD, PhD
Enthusiastic about the implications of microbiota on mental health and periodontitis, and it's relationship with other systemic diseases. Outside of science, I enjoy sports, animals, music and history.
PhD Student

PhD Student. Computer Science Program
Kristina Lacasta López, Health Engineer
Passionate about the intersection of data and healthcare and how data-driven insights can support clinical practice. Outside of work, I enjoy films and creative activities.
Undergraduate Researchers

Dental Student
Ángela de la Cruz Gándara Álvarez
Motivated by learning and delving deeper into the world of microbiota. My hobbies include enjoying nature, reading, and traveling.

Dental Student
Violeta Oliva Palma
Driven by curiosity and a passion for continuous learning, I enjoy exploring new scientific concepts every day. Beyond academics, I love staying active through sports, enjoying time with my friends, and discovering new gastronomy.

Dental Student
Nuria Guerra Guillén
Dental hygienist passionate about the clinic, wanting to enter the world of research. My hobbies outside the dental world are paddle tennis and social networks.

Dental Student
Juana María Sánchez Moruno
My main purpose is to discover how oral diseases influence our systemic well-being. As for me, I’ve been into sports for as long as I can remember, and I’m an animal lover!

Basic and Experimental Biomedicine Student
Antonio Santiago Fernández
Driven by a deep curiosity about how the human body interacts with external factors, I explore the fascinating dynamics of physiology and the microbiome. Passionate about constant learning, I enjoy discovering how subtle fluctuations shape health and balance. Outside the lab, I'm passionate about sports, especially basketball, and I love getting away to nature.

Our colaborators
The platform is supported by an international collaborative network of researchers, clinicians and patient associations from Europe, North America, South America and Asia. This network enables integrative research across disciplines and contexts, facilitating the co-development of scientifically robust and socially responsible research questions.
